MOTHERHOOD DOCUMENTARY PROJECT

According to NPR, the average age for women to have their first child is 26.3; I am 28 years old and I still have not ventured down that avenue. I got married on May 19, 2012, and I bought a four-bedroom house in a school district that I like in December 2012, but I still haven’t made the plunge. The idea of motherhood terrifies me and fascinates me all at the same time.

Mothers dedicate so much of themselves to their children. I hear that it is an exhausting and rewarding experience; it is a series of highs and lows, and its perfectly imperfect. Motherhood is complicated.

Each mother has her own perspective on motherhood and all motherhoods are a little different. Some mothers feel their way of raising children is better than another’s way. Society tries to categorize mothers by using titles like working moms, stay-at-home moms, crunchy moms, PTA moms, etc. But from an outside perspective, all mothers are doing the same thing. Mothers go through the same struggles and they all want their children to be happy and safe.

My series, Motherhood, captures mothers and their children naturally in a documentary style. I chose to use only the light in the environment for these images, creating a more natural, and in some cases, more dramatic look to the photos. I want you to truly experience a snippet of motherhood through my images.

The subjects are mothers of all types. Some stay at home and others do not. Some feed their children a specific diet, while others do not. As you go through the images, notice how you can see differences, but there is an overall similarity of different types of motherhoods, because while each mother does their own thing, they are really doing the same thing.
